Amanda's decision to run is a natural extension of her career as a public servant. Howland has dedicated her career to working with families in our community. She is a former Special Education teacher, working with emotionally disturbed and behavior-disordered students in Lake and McHenry Counties. She was an Assistant Principal and a Principal in elementary education in Bartlett and then went to Chicago-Kent College of Law. Howland has her own Lake County law firm serving Lake, Cook, Kane, DuPage and McHenry counties helping Illinois families. Amanda is passionate about competitive gymnastics and is a certified judge. She is frequently in our local high schools judging girls meets. She and her family live in unincorporated Lake Zurich. ![]() Amanda is not a career politician but she has always been committed to public service. In 2004, she traveled to battleground states to discuss issues and candidate differences with voters. She also served in Ohio as an attorney on voter protection issues. She is currently an elected Trustee for the College of Lake County. Quality of education, including school funding and after-school programs are important, especially as workers need additional training to prepare for new or different jobs due to our high unemployment rate. Bringing jobs to Illinois and getting back to being a state that manufactures and invents things is her number one priority. ![]() In early 2011, Amanda was chosen as one of only ten women (from a statewide group of applicants) to participate in the Illinois Women's Institute for Leadership. IWIL is a 501(c)(4) educational organization that was founded in 2002 by Loretta Durbin and a distinguished group of Democratic women who recognized the need to train more Democratic women to run for elected office at all levels of Illinois government. Since the program's inception, 109 women have completed the training. More than 50 graduates have run for public office, 37 have won and dozens of others are working at the grassroots level to register voters and volunteer in various campaigns. Amanda graduated from the program in October of 2011. Last November Amanda was recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for excellence in Child Advocacy Law and Public Service. |
